Hello everyone, this is the first entry that I’m writing for this blog and I’m very excited about it. Because now, the big adventure “living in Japan” is not just a vague idea or a plan for a project that is yet to come. No, this is real! And it’s going to start very soon.
But before we will depart on Tuesday, we still have a lot to do… and a lot to process! Niklas and I experienced a week of hell (quite literally as it was extremely hot in Germany!) a.k.a. we moved out of our nice little flat in Mainz and had to move our stuff to Niklas parents who are so kind to sacrifice all their space in their home for our furniture, boxes, cloths, etc.
It was a huge project and a tough deadline but somehow we survived it and managed to do everything just in time. Luckily, our families and many friends assisted us - without their tremendous support, we wouldn’t have managed this in such a short time. So thank you everyone who took part in this, we are so glad to have such great friends and family members in our lives. :)
Our last days in Germany are quite emotional. We have to say goodbye to our friends, to our flat where we lived seven years and to the wonderful city of Mainz, our home… Most of you know that we’ve both loved this city and enjoyed living there. Although we are looking forward to living in Japan, it is not easy to leave it all behind.
Right now, we are busy packing our belongings we want to bring to Japan, which is quite difficult as we have to decide what to bring, what to leave behind and most importantly, everything has to fit into the luggage! Overweight will cost us a fortune, so we are spending our finals hours in Germany packing and unpacking our suitcases to avoid any extra weight. Lucky for us, Niklas family will visit us end of July and as they are allowed to bring a lot of bags with them, his parents offered to bring our stuff that will not fit into our own bags. :)
We also had a lot to plan regarding our apartment in Japan. Just days away from departure, we got the message that we would not have a flat in Kanazawa (contrary from what we expected), so additionally to moving out of our flat, we went through some emotional stress while trying to fix this problem as fast as we could. After some ups and downs we managed to find a nice apartment close to the university of Kanazawa and Niklas professor booked it for us. However, a new challenge is waiting for us as this apartment is unfurnished. ;-) It seems as we have to shop for some nice furniture during the first days in Kanazawa… I’m really curious how we will manage that.
Our flight to Komatsu, Japan departs on Tuesday, July 2nd at 13:45. The next post from us will be the first one from Japan, so if you want to know how our furniture shopping process works out (or not) and if there is IKEA in Japan, stay tuned for more!
Until then you can have a look at those pictures:
